France vs USA preview
Both France and the United States won its 2011 Women's World Cup quarterfinal matches on penalty kicks. France took out England and the USA defeated Brazil. While having go to the penalty shootout in a match is exciting enough, the USA's win was a tad more dramatic than France's victory.
OK, it was not even in the same league as France's win. USA's win was one of the most dramatic comebacks that I have seen in soccer.
Will the USA be emotionally drained after scoring the latest goal in World Cup history to send the match to penalty kicks and then winning the shootout? I really doubt it. Will both France and the United States be physically drained after playing extra time in the team's last matches? In addition, the United States played a large chunk of the game with only 10 players due to a red card. I think that the United States should fare better in that aspect due to their conditioning training regime, but also that both sides will be good to go July 13.
If you are trying to break down what edges one team might have over another in a World Cup, experience is a good place to start. The United States has the most capped team in the World Cup, but France is not far behind at third.
Both teams have scored plenty of goals in this tournament, and I don't really feel that either side as an advantage in this aspect of the game. Scorers to watch for France are Marie-Laure Delie and Gaetane Thiney, both with two goals in the tournament. Despite a long goalless streak before the World Cup, Abby Wambach has now netted a goal in each of the last two games for the United States, including the crucial game-tying goal against Brazil. USA's Lauren Cheney only has one goal but has been getting plenty of opportunities.
