Uruguay v Mexico  preview

Things aren’t really clicking for the Uruguayans. Playmaker Diego Forlan is yet to find the net despite getting a few genuine chances to do so. Meanwhile, the entire team hasn’t managed to unlock the gates to victory. One of the positives in their 1-1 draw against Peru was that they came from a goal down to earn a point.

Pundits and fans eventually tipped Uruguay to go one better in the following game against Chile. When Pereira broke the deadlock with a 53rd minute strike, especially, it looked like La Celeste Olimpica had found true grace from above at last. But Sanchez and co had other ideas as the Chileans ran away with a point at the end of the match.

This time round, Uruguay cannot afford to commit more mistakes. Besides, anything less than a win definitely not be welcomed knowing that Mexico’s team is packed with inexperienced players.

However, those inexperienced players—led by Gold Cup top player Giovanni dos Santos—have the will to cause upsets. Do they have the potential? Maybe yes, maybe not.

Results would speak for themselves while you may spend your time arguing on the strength of Mexico’s 2011 Copa America squad. And whereas winning has become the Mexican’s sole option to survive in Argentina, it will be something huge should Uruguay exit the competition from the first round..
