The Croatia goalkeeper was keen on a move to Parkhead, despite the contract on offer being far less than what he was earning in Russia.

The 32-year-old agreed to terminate his contract with Spartak, giving up a substantial pay-off in the process, in order to go on an extended trial with Neil Lennon's men.

However, despite playing in two friendlies against Cardiff and Wolves, he did not do enough to convince Lennon to offer him a permanent contract, leaving him to count the cost of that cancelled deal with Spartak.

"I really wanted to play for Celtic, but I think now it was a big mistake that I agreed to stay more than three days and played two games," Pletikosa told the Scottish Sun.

"I was also prepared to accept a wage three times less. But now I have to find a club elsewhere.

"I felt I deserved to get a contract. I'm sure I would have been a very good goalkeeper for Celtic."
