Americans Mardy Fish and John Isner clash for a place in the next round of the 2011 Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP World Tour 1000 event being played here in Madrid, Spain.

Mardy Fish has done some wonders in the recent months. After losing pounds & pounds of flesh to get back into the competitive shape, Fish secured his place in the finals of the 2011 Cincinnati Masters, losing to Roger Federer. Fish picked up some confidence boosting wins in Miami this year to advance to the semifinals. With dominant wins over players like Juan Martin Del Potro and David Ferrer in Miami, Fish has somehow managed to justify his improved ranking. The start to claycourt season wasn't very good for Fish who skipped events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. With only one win under his belt of clay this year, Fish is definitely going to find it difficult to get past Isner.

John Isner shone brightest with compatriot Sam Querrey in the doubles arena when he reached the finals in Houston. Isner has had more losses than wins this year with his best performance coming in Melbourne at the Australian Open where he reached thethird round with the help of two solid wins over Florent Serra and Radek Stepanek.

Both players have contested two matches before which have been won by Fish after quite a lot of struggle. Fish may not be super successful on the red clay but he will find a way to get past Isner in two closely contested sets.
