As the season picks up, Nancy has spent three years in prison and now lives in a strictly monitored halfway house in New York City, while the family meet after the other Botwins had spent three years in Denmark. Silas is 24, Shane is 18, and Stevie is 4.

 Nancy learns that she will be released from prison early, though she did not even serve half of her sentence. She is placed into a halfway house in New York City where she has to serve the rest of her sentence. She had hoped to go into witness protection to evade Esteban; however, Agent Lipschitz tells her that Esteban died in jail.

When she left from prison, her lover and cellmate, Zoya, gave her oven mits to find a key to get into the trunk of a car. In there were explosives which Zoya stole from her brother. Apparently, Zoya had wanted Nancy to sell them to someone on the black market, but instead Nancy sells them to start a deal with Zoya's brother for weed.

Andy, Doug, Silas, and Shane had been living in Copenhagen for the last three years. Shane was a puppeteer with his now ex-girlfriend, Silas had been a model for "some flower water", and Andy and Doug were giving tours of Copenhagen under the name "Wonderful Wonderful Tours" (much like premiere of season five, Wonderful Wonderful). They learn from Jill, who has been raising Stevie to believe Nancy is his aunt, that Nancy has been released and is in a halfway house in New York City. Andy, Doug, Silas, and Shane travel to New York City to find Nancy, much to her dismay.
