The French side currently sit fifth in Ligue 1 with only one defeat in the league so far.  They also took the lead away at Udinese in matchday one before eventually going down 2-1.  Gregorio Mazano will be without full-backs Silvio and Antonio Lopez as well as Koke but is expected to name his strongest line-up with Radamel Falcao, Arda Turan, Jose Antonio Reyes and Diego all featuring.

Rennes have thier own host of injury problems with Yacime Brahimi, John Boye, Onyekachi Apam, Kader Mangane and Abdoulrazak Boukari all out.

STAT: Rennes beat Osasuna 3-1 on aggregate in their only previous meeting with Spanish opposition in 2005

Athletic Bilbao v Paris Saint-Germain

The murmurs of discontent are building at the San Mamés with Marcelo Bielsa knowing the only way to eradicate them will be by winning games, and that’s precisely what the Argentinean will be looking to do on Thursday evening when PSG visit. Bielsa’s solitary win so far was in this very competition against Slovan Bratislava inSlovakia, in what came as a welcome distraction from the sub-par performances domestically. Athletic have been beaten by Espanyol, Real Betis and Málaga so far this season and things have to change quickly before the situation worsens. Players have been shuffled into positions out of sync, and the team on the whole has failed to cohesively operate, but another game gives another chance to develop together.

Ander Herrera is the only absence, and he was back training this week albeit on a light schedule.

PSG meanwhile are top of the French league following their summer recruitment drive, and are unbeaten in eight games. An opening day defeat is a thing of the past now, as they most recently won Montpellier at the weekend 3-0 and won their opening Europa League game against Salzburg via the same score line. Much of the game will focus on the impression Javier Pastore who has started his career in France in blistering fashion, already weighing in with goals and assists as Antoine Koumbare’s side brushed aside those in their way.

Jérémy Ménez, Kévin Gameiro, Mamadou Sakho, Milan Biševac and Guillaume Hoarau are all ruled out, but Christophe Jallet and Luciano Monzon return in defence.

FACT: Athletic Bilbao haven’t won in their last three European games at the San Mamés.Paris Saint-Germain travel to the intimidating Estadio San Mamés to face Basque side Athletic Bilbao in Europa League Group F with fans hoping that Javier Pastore can continue his fine run of form at the club.  Pastore has been an instrumental part to the side’s successes so far this season, which has seen the club drift to the top of the Ligue 1 table, a spot which is shared with Olympique Lyonnais for the moment.

PSG have the better form over the last five matches in all competitions, though playing away in Bilbao will not be the easiest of tasks for the capital city club.  With Athletic Bilbao currently in the relegation zone in La Liga and defender Borja Ekiza, who was sent off in a 1-1 draw with Villarreal at the weekend, concedes that the game may be a struggle:

“We face a beautiful game against a strong rival and we will go all out to get a victory.  We know it will be difficult because PSG have made important signings this summer but we will do our best.  Pastore is their strongest player.  We have to make sure we do not give him room to manoeuvre.”

At present, both PSG and Athletic Bilbao have three points in Group F of the competition following wins over Red Bull Salzburg and Slovan Bratislava respectively.  With the recent summer spending in Paris, the club could look forward to a decent run in the Europa League this season but may want to ensure a decent standing in Ligue 1 at the same time.  With this being said, the club face rivals Olympique Lyonnais at home on Sunday so it would be natural for coach Antoine Kombouaré to keep one eye on this fixture.

Paris Saint-Germain recorded a victory against Montpellier this weekend in Ligue 1, a victory which saw the club leap to the top of the Ligue 1 table with Lyon.  Kevin Gameiro and Jérémy Menez have not travelled with the squad whilst Guillaume Hoarau will be missing with a shoulder injury.  A strong 3-0 win saw Kombouaré full of praise for his men but spoke of a need for togetherness and humility:

“What pleases me most is the victory. We knew we were up against the league leaders and the team with the best defence in the Championship.  This is an important victory that allows us to go joint top of the rankings, but it is only the eighth game.  We are only just at the beginning and the road is so long, we need to keep out feet on the ground.”

Nevertheless, Athletic Bilbao are a side with talent who can cause problems for any given side.  Their commendable policy for using only home-grown Basque talent has saw the club gain a strong reputation across Europe.  Striker Fernando Llorente is a World Cup-winning striker with Spain and has been courted by a number of clubs in recent years.  Midfielder Javi Martínez also participated in the World Cup and has been playing regularly at club level since his teenage years.  Martínez had this to say on the confrontation:

“You can take it in two ways − get depressed or motivate yourself to do better.  For me, adversity is a motivating factor; it brings out my best side and makes me want to improve.  We’ve got three points on the board in Europe and a victory on Thursday night would mean an important step taken towards our first objective, which is to qualify from the group.  Winning is always good, but in the case of this specific game it would give us a psychological boost because we know we would have done so against a great team.”
