Venue: American Express Community Stadium

MATCH PREVIEW

Liverpool's early-season optimism disappeared amid a cloud of red cards and Tottenham goals on Sunday.

Back-to-back defeats against Spurs and Stoke have left fans wondering whether Kenny Dalglish's new-look side is capable of bringing back the good times to Anfield or prolonging the agony of under-achievement.

They will have been wounded by their mauling at White Hart Lane but can expect few favours from a Brighton side that only suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday.

Kenny Dalglish underlined his approach to this competition by fielding a strong XI against Exeter in the second round and can be expected to do the same at the Amex, which has so far offered little reward to visiting teams.

Brighton will smell blood - Liverpool will scent danger.
