Alexandr Dolgopolov takes on Xavier Malisse this evening in the quarter-finals of the ATP Metz. Dolgopolov looked set for an early exit on Wednesday night, but the third seed rallied strongly to deny Marcos Baghdatis his 200th career ATP win, defeating the Cypriot 6-7 7-5 6-3.
Having come from 3-5 down to clinch the first set tiebreak, Baghdatis had multiple opportunities to gain a potentially decisive break in the second, but Dolgopolov held on, reeling off five straight games from 6-7 5-5 to wrest control of the match.
This Dolgopolov’s eighth quarter-final of a breakthrough 2011 season, which has also seen him make the fourth round of the US Open.
Malisse has not been quite so consistent, but he’s a seasoned competitor indoors and eased to a 6-4 6-2 second round win over Igor Kunitsyn on Thursday night night.
Dolgopolov is still in with an outside chance of reaching the end of year ATP World Tour Finals, although he’ll need a big performance in either Shanghai or Paris over the next couple of months.
If he wins the title this week he’ll move up to 13th in the race.
Prediction: Dolgopolov in three.
