But that whole time, it felt like it was building to something, and I think we finally know what that something was.
Gatsby's mobile makeover assault unit, the brainchild of makeup artist Olivia and hijacking victim of stylist Tracy, was recently launched and is poised to sneak-attack the entire state of New Jersey with semi-see-through clothing and smokey eyes. But first it needs a catchy name, something that doesn't infringe on the copyrights of Gatsby's most loathed rival, Alexa "The Glam Fairy"... I've got it! The Gatsby Glam Squad!
Or at least, that's what salon manager Christy thinks up. If you heard that and shouted at your television, "That's a terrible name!" then you aren't alone. Because I screamed it, too. But when Olivia immediately brings up the conflict, Christy, who despises Alexa and thinks about her every morning when she throws darts at a picture of her face, says, "I honestly never even thought about that." I think she's a little unclear on the definition of "honestly."And once Frankie's gone, things only get weirder. Carla watches as the Glam Squad purdies up some young relatives, and she just can't leave Gigi alone. "You're part of me," she tells her son's former girlfriend, and I type in my notes, "This show is getting really creepy." But before things can go all Leighton Meester-Minka Kelly in The Roommate (I swear I didn't see it), Gigi is forced to dump her ex-boyfriend's mom. Carla sobs and says, "I can't even imagine my life without you in it." Time to change the locks again, Gigi.
After an evening of hair dye and heartbreak, the mobile team reassembles at the Gatsby to learn that their bosses have backed down to the Glam Fairy's wishes, and they will now be known as "Gatsby to Go." Which should have been the name in the first place. But then we wouldn't have had this glorious 44 minutes of TV, now would we?
Oh, there was a secondary storyline this week, but it sort of fell by the wayside — the lovable and oddly talented Lorenzo is making his way through beauty school, and he's ready to intern at Anthony's salon. The only problem is that Lorenzo used to date Olivia, who works at Anthony's a few days a week. But Anthony tells him that if he can get her approval, he'll give him an internship.
So the two meet at Fuddruckers (more on that below), where Lorenzo promises Olivia he won't be such a goof-off and she'll see his responsible side come out. Olivia, who is awfully mean to the well-intentioned but silly Lorenzo, finally abides, and Lorenzo has his foot in the door. After a rough start to his first day, he straightens his act up, and everyone at the salon nods to each other in approval, as if to signify to the audience, "We approve of this." Now let's see this freak get a hold of some hair and show the world what he can do.
Random notes:
• Lorenzo and Olivia had a business meeting at Fuddruckers — Fudd-ruck-ers! Because all professional get-togethers should have big vats of melted cheese you can smear across your meal.
• Also admirable is Lorenzo's desire to be a stylist: He likes to make girls feel sexy. As he then explains, imitating himself talking to a customer, "I just made you feel sexy. You're welcome." Bright future ahead of this kid, I tell you.
• It was mentioned that Gatsby intern Filippo may drop out of beauty school, but more important was that he finally told us his dream job — opening a barbershop/pizzeria. That may be the single grossest idea I've ever heard! "Did anyone order the hair pizza? Nobody? Well does anyone want a plain pizza covered in hair, because that's all we got."
