Hecking's side have picked up just three points from their last five games, but that does not mean they make the short trip south without any hope at all.
"We are going to set ourselves up to take something from this game at Bayern, that has got to be our aim," said Hecking at the pre-match press conference.
"Everybody expects us to lose anyway so that could be our chance.
"We are in a good position and we are all looking forward to the game."
Bayern captain Philipp Lahm is worried the importance of the fixture may be lost on some of his team mates.
"For me as a Bavarian it is definitely something special to play against Nurnberg again and experience such a derby, but I don't think there are many others in the team who share my feeling," he told reporters at a press conference.
"There are only a few individuals like Thomas Muller, for example, for whom this game will be special, but for the rest it will be a game like any other."
Bayern remain three points clear at the top despite suffering a 2-1 defeat at Hannover last weekend.
"A win is our aim and it is even better if we do it impressively and dominantly," added Lahm, who was one of several regulars rested for the 6-0 win over Ingolstadt in the DFB-Pokal in midweek.
Franck Ribery, Mario Gomez, Manuel Neuer and Bastian Schweinsteiger were also afforded a break by coach Jupp Heynckes, but they should all return by Saturday.
Hecking may be without Albert Bunjaku after the Swiss forward picked up an injury in Nurnberg's midweek cup win over Erzgebirge Aue.
Timm Klose, who is no relation to the former Bayern striker Miroslav, is an option in defence.
