Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as a woman who, after witnessing a murder, goes on the run, hiding out by assuming the life of her wealthy identical twin sister – only to learn that her sister's seemingly idyllic life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she's trying to leave behind. Bridget is six months sober and starting to turn her life around when she is the sole witness to a professional hit. Despite the assurances of her FBI protector, Agent Victor Machado, Bridget knows her life is on the line. She flees to New York, telling no one, not even her Narcotics Anonymous sponsor, Malcolm. In New York, Bridget reunites with her estranged twin, Siobhan. Wealthy, pampered and married to the strikingly handsome Andrew Martin, Siobhan lives what appears to be a fairy tale life – a life where no one knows that Bridget exists. The sisters seem to be mending their frayed relationship, until Siobhan disappears overboard during a boat trip, and Bridget makes the split decision to take on her sister's identity. She discovers shocking secrets, not only about her sister and her marriage, but also about Siobhan's best friend, Gemma, and Gemma's husband, Henry. And when someone tries to kill Bridget in her sister's penthouse, she realizes she is no safer as Siobhan than she is as herself.Sarah “The Vampire Slayer” Michelle Gellar makes a small-screen comeback with Ringer, a new drama in which she plays not one but two of the lead roles.

She’s Siobhan Martin and Bridget Kelly, a set of identical twins. Each has their secrets, and each has a lot to learn about the other.

Bridget is an ex-striper and a recovering addict, on the run from police after witnessing a mob murder. When she visits Siobhan for the first time in six years to make amends as part of her addiction recovery, she wakes up from a nap on board a boat to find she’s the sister has vanished, presumed drowned. So, naturally, she starts living her twin’s life. And to begin with, it’s a genius move – the people chasing her think she’s Siobhan and she’s suddenly living the high life. But Siobhan had her secrets too, as Bridget discovers when she is attacked.

As for Siobhan, of course she didn’t actually drown – but we don’t see that much of her in this opening episode. Probably for the best.

God, it’s confusing to begin with. We’re fed parts of Bridget and Siobhan’s lives so gradually that it’s hard to keep track of who Gellar is playing. Thankfully, it’s not so confusing to tell the twins apart when they’re on screen together, but the production in that particular scene is genuinely terrible. It’s the scene where they’re both on a boat, the one where Siobhan disappears, and it’s so poorly green-screened I’m convinced a film crew in the 1960s would have done better. Is this the worst scene in recent TV history? But that said, as soon as the twins are separated and Bridget starts life as Siobhan things do pick up a little. Or at least, it seems a possibility that it could pick up a little in the next few episodes.

The dialogue is quite clunky and melodramatic (and not in a good way like, say, Revenge), and the acting is temperamental. Gellar is OK – beautiful, but OK – and she’s far better as Bridget than she is as Siobhan. Fair play for wanting to set the characters apart but they still both have to be real. Perhaps as we get to know Siobhan better over the coming episodes she’ll grow into the role more.

If it sounds confusing, it’s because it is. Ringer takes a while to get your head around but I don’t think it’s worth giving up on. It may make a lacklustre debut but if it’s handled well, it could become another hit for The CW over time.
