Team news ahead of Southampton's Championship clash with Watford at St Mary's on Saturday.Dean Hammond could be restored to the Southampton starting line-up.The midfielder and Saints skipper was confined to the bench as the Championship leaders were beaten 2-1 at Cardiff on Wednesday night.Left-back Dan Harding will be assessed having missed the last five matches with a knee injury, while long-term absentees Radhi Jaidi and Lee Barnard are also close to returning.Veteran defender Jaidi has been out all season with a knee injury and striker Barnard has yet to appear due to an ankle problem, but both are back in training.Centre-half Dan Seaborne is still out as he recovers from a head injury sustained during an assault outside a nightclub earlier this month.
Sean Dyche is likely to stick with a winning line-up when he takes his Watford side to the soauth coast.Dyche made one change in midweek as out-of-form goalkeeper Scott Loach was dropped to the bench in favour of Rene Gilmartin, who made his first ever league start for the Hertfordshire club. And despite going behind against Millwall at Vicarage Road, Watford hit back to prevail 2-1 late on.

Dyche has no major new injury problems to contend with ahead of the trip to St Mary's,where Saints are yet to drop any points so far this season.

Midfielder Piero Mingoia has joined defender Lee Hodson (both knee) on the sidelines, although the pair are unlikely to have made the matchday 16 in any case. Long-term absentee Stephen McGinn also continues to miss out with a knee problem of his own.Even though Southampton have only just emerged from League One, the bookmakers tipped them for much more success than Watford. At the moment, those predictions appear to be vindicated, with Saints approaching this game sat top of the league after a superb opening nine games to the season. Watford on the other hand are not struggling as much as certain people expected, although the Hornets are still sat in a lowly 15th position.

Having collected nineteen points from their opening nine games, it would be fair to say that Southampton have enjoyed an absolutely superb start to life back in the Championship. Nigel Adkins has kept his squad from last season mostly together and that trust appears to be paying dividends, with some Saints supporters now setting their sights on a second successive promotion. However, while the club have enjoyed incredible success so far, Adkins will be careful to guard against complacency after the St Mary’s outfit were beaten 2-1 by Cardiff in their last outing. That defeat was only the club’s second of the campaign and Adkins will be hoping that the bookies are right for this next fixture, which puts Southampton as clear favorites for the clash.

Watford on the other hand are exceeding expectations, with the Hornets sat in 15th place after an accumulation of ten points. After losing so many key players during the summer and seeing manager Malky Mackay leave for Cardiff, most of the bookies completely wrote off the Vicarage Road outfit and tipped them for a disastrous campaign. However, after getting over a sticky start, Sean Dyche’s side have now found their feet and approach this fixture unbeaten on the road. What’s more, after beating Millwall 2-1 in their last outing, the Hornets will at least hold some confidence behind them as they make the trip to the league leaders.

There’s little to report in the way of team news for Southampton although Nigel Adkins may be able to include Dan Harding after the defender made a recovery from a knee injury. Other than that, Saints do not have any other issues although Adkins may make changes following Wednesday’s loss to Cardiff. Watford on the other hand have several concerns with Lee Hodson and Stephen McGinn both set to miss out again through knee injuries. Elsewhere, Sean Dyche also has to contend with the absence of Piero Mingoia following a recent fitness setback.

In terms of a prediction, our tip will be a home victory. Southampton may have lost their last game, but they have been impressive for much of the season and are also stronger on paper than their opponents. With that, we expect a 2-0 win for Nigel Adkins’ men.
