At the end of a week in which we learned that the Premier League could use goal line technology next season, here's a fixture with a history that's played a significant part in its development.

It's now 23 games and more than 11 months since Tim Cahill's last goal

One of the systems Fifa has checked out is "Goalminder" - developed by two Bolton fans with a sense of outrage lingering from a 0-0 draw v Everton in September 1997, a game in which Wanderers defender Gerry Taggart headed the ball over the line with no goal given. The big significance? Bolton were relegated at the end of the season - behind Everton on goal difference.

Fourteen years on and Bolton could again face a fight to stay in the top flight. Won three, lost nine in the league this season only tells part of the story. It's won three, lost 14 since April - a malaise that some attributed to their FA Cup semi-final thrashing by Stoke. A 5-0 revenge win in their last game at the Reebok three weeks ago should have finally exorcised the demons, but there was precious little sign of that having happened in a lacklustre second-half display at West Brom last Saturday.

Whilst that was going on, Everton were working hard for a much-needed win against Wolves. They haven't won successive Premier League games since April, but that will be the target as they seek to shrug off their now almost traditional slow start to the season.

A look at the stats shows what few goals they've scored being shared out, with seven players having two to their name. What's most noticeable is the absence of Tim Cahill from the list. It's now 23 games and more than 11 months since the Aussie's last goal. What better time to end that drought than in his 250th Everton game?
