The Red Devils remain five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, but will feel that they are well-placed to launch a defence of their top flight crown.

They have, however, been grinding results out of late, rather than blowing sides away in a manner similar to their cross-city rivals.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been around long enough to know that the ability to pick up results when you are not playing well is a positive sign, but he will also be keen to see his side hit top gear as the busy festive period draws ever closer.

History is certainly on their side heading into the latest round of fixtures, with Manchester United having seen off Newcastle in 13 of their last 17 Premier League meetings.

They have also kept more clean sheets this season than any other top flight side (six), despite having had to fend off more shots on target (64).

Ferguson will be looking for his side to keep things tight again on Saturday, while Newcastle will be aiming to bring an end to two disappointing barren runs against the Red Devils.

The Magpies have never won a Premier League fixture at Old Trafford, with 11 defeats suffered in their last 17 visits.

They have also failed to find the target on five of their last seven outings in the red half of Manchester.

Alan Pardew will want to buck those trends this weekend, with Newcastle hoping to offer a positive response to their first setback of the season.

They came unstuck against Manchester City last time out, meaning the table-topping Blues are the only side to have beaten Manchester United and Newcastle in their last 15 top flight games.
