The Rams had hoped John Brayford would be back in contention after a thigh injury, but the defender is not expected to be risked and midfielder Paul Green looks set to continue at right-back in his absence.
Contrary to reports this week, Steven Davies will not make a surprise return to the squad after fracturing his skull against Southampton less than two months ago. He will remain on the sidelines along with fellow forwards Theo Robinson and Nathan Tyson.
Leading scorer Robinson is on course to return from the hamstring injury that has ruled him out since mid-November when Derby travel to Ipswich next weekend.
Tyson is closing in on a return from almost three months out with a troublesome groin injury. The summer signing from Nottingham Forest is set to resume training next week, having failed to take part in a practice match due to feeling discomfort in his groin.
Bristol City welcome Marvin Elliott and Lewin Nyatanga back into their squad.
Midfielder Elliott missed the Robins' 1-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough last weekend to attend the birth of his baby daughter, while defender Nyatanga was absent from the same match with an ankle injury.
Both are available to Derek McInnes this week and could be handed instant recalls.
Stephen Pearson will not be taking part for City, meanwhile, under the terms of his loan arrangement from Derby.
Yannick Bolasie and Jamal Campbell-Ryce are pushing for a place in McInnes' first XI and are challenging winger Greg Woolford, who escaped a bizarre injury in midweek after he stood on a pin while putting up Christmas decorations.
