The bad news is that Everton only have 5 wins all season and is currently on a 2 game losing run. This Saturday they hope to put that right when they face newly promoted Norwich City at Goodison.
Goodison Park is normally a very tough ground to visit but not so this year. With Everton managing just 2 wins from 7 games played and suffering 4 defeats, the Toffees rank 15th in the home form and are under big pressure to return to winning ways.
Everton are notoriously slow in the first half of the season and generally kick on after Xmas but that past performance doesn't guarantee they will start winning this season.
The 2 home wins have come against Wigan (3-1) and Wolves (2-1) sides that are struggling this season. The defeats were to QPR (0-1), Liverpool (0-2), Man United (0-1) and Stoke (0-1).
We can see straight away where the problem lies for this team, they just don't score enough goals. In 7 home games they have just 7 goals and have been shut out a staggering 4 times in these games.
Thankfully for Everton, Norwich hasn't kept a clean sheet this season so if they are to get goals this is an ideal opponent to be playing.
Everton Team News
Team news is that Anichebe, Osman, Rodwell are out whilst Drenthe is a doubt. Moyes will rely on the toothless due of Saha and Cahill for goals, a partnership that has a poor 2 goals between them, all from Saha.
What is embarrassing is that Arteta who left in August is still the joint second top scorer with 2 goals. The bonus for Everton is that the back line and keeper are strong and quite settled with Jagielka and Distin/Heitinga a solid centreback pairing. Against Arsenal they frustrated the Gooners for large spells and should be able to handle Norwich's much less threatening attack in Saturday's game.
Norwich City
Lambert continues to do an excellent job with this Norwich side currently occupying 10th place in the league. They are currently 7 points ahead of the drop zone and any point at Goodison will be very useful in the survival quest.
With Everton struggling at home, you may expect to suggest Norwich as a possible shock winner in this one. However, it's very clear as with most newly promoted clubs, the home form will keep them up and not the away record.
Four of Norwich City's 5 wins have come at home so I can't expect too much from this side when they visit Goodison on Saturday. In 7 away games they have won at Bolton (1-2) whilst losing at Chelsea (3-1), Man United (2-0), Villa (3-2) and Man City (5-1).
Now to be fair to Lambert's side, Chelsea, United and City are brutal away games and in the Chelsea and United games they deserved to take points missing glorious chances in both games when the scores were level. If they play with that intensity at Everton they could shock a few people this weekend.
The problem as mentioned above is no clean sheets all season but they do have goals in them. Norwich has failed to score in just 2 games this season with the sole away game at Old Trafford where still to this day I have no idea how they didn't score! The good news is that the side is on a 8 game scoring streak that started back on 15th October and I think they will definitely score this weekend.
Norwich City Team News
Lambert will be without De Laet, Martin, Vaughan and Ward this Saturday but he has rotated this side well keeping most players fresh and hungry when selected.
I expect Norwich to be brave in this one and go with a 4-4-2 as Holt partners Morison but we may see Hoolahan start instead forming a 5 in midfield.
The width will be supplied by Pilkington and Crofts and going by the season so far, Norwich should create a few chances this weekend.
The Betting Verdict
Everton are odds on for this one and it's purely based on their "name". For me, I'd want around evens for Everton given their 2 game losing run and that their home form has been brutal this season.
Norwich may have lost their last 2 away games but their schedule has been pretty brutal. The same case could be made for Everton at home, however the Toffees just can't score enough goals to win games and have already lost to a promoted side at home this season in QPR.
I'm happy to take Everton on this weekend and back Norwich on the handicap of +1.25 goals. If Everton wins by a goal we still win at half our stake, but I think Norwich could get a point here, especially if as I expect they score at Goodison.
Not saying the home side won't finally produce a solid home performance but they haven't convinced me this season and I'll happily take Norwich with a head start.
