An eye-watering £150million is guaranteed from Warrior and the Reds believe there is the potential to double that amount now they have control of selling their own merchandise worldwide.

The criticism levelled at the club by adidas chief executive Herbert Hainer that Liverpool talked their way out of a new agreement because they demanded too much cash smacks of sour grapes.

After the end of this season Liverpool will move forward without the services of the ditched German sports manufacturer. And what the Warrior deal shows is that the Reds’ pulling power is greater than ever.

The challenge now facing manager Kenny Dalglish is to ensure that commercial progress is replicated on the playing front.

“The kit deal helps to grow the club further, but the greatest help we can do for ourselves is to make sure we get some success on the pitch and we’ll try our best to do that,” he said.

“Finances are all very well and good – and if you don’t have any finances it makes it difficult to be successful – but I think success on the pitch is the biggest factor for us. It’s important for us to continue the progress. I don’t think anybody here wants to be unsuccessful.

“Everybody wants to push onwards and upwards. We’ll not set any goals or ambitions but we want to do as well as we possibly can.”
