The immediate question upon his swift appointment was whether Rangers can match his ambitions, given that he clearly wants to win trophies and compete at the highest level - just as he did in his playing career. Hughes said the reason he left fellow west Londoners Fulham is that they didn't share his desperation for success… one can only imagine that QPR owner Tony Fernandes does, and that the club have deeper pockets.
Looking back over our shoulders for a second, there's an irony in the fact that many people considered Hughes unlucky to lose his job at Manchester City - and now the same is being said of the man he has replaced, Neil Warnock. It just goes to show what a cut-throat business football has become.
I actually felt that Hughes paid the price at City for adopting the same attitude he had at Blackburn - namely that not getting beaten was a good result. City's wealthy new owners have a loftier vision. Hughes may have to temper his short-term dreams for now, while he tries to drag QPR away from the relegation zone, but I'm pretty sure he will have an impact.
Making it an immediate one will be tough. Newcastle have now kept seven clean sheets this Premier League season, only one shy of their overall total from last season, and their last match at home - which I was at - was a certain 3-0 win over the champions. The stadium was rocking, but that was against Manchester United and - crucially - there's no Cheick Tiote or Demba Ba to get the crowd going this time.
Wily Hughes will try to use those key absences to his new team's advantage. Coming away with a draw might be a realistic aim, given that QPR have not savoured victory since a 3-2 win at Stoke on 19 November and have taken just two Premier League points from the past 24.
