Metalist started the knockout rounds with a comfortable 8-1 aggregate success over Salzburg scoring four times in both legs. They looked to be heading out of the competition at the last 16 stage, losing the home leg of their meeting with Olympiakos 1-0 and trailing by the same scoreline entering the last ten minutes of the return in Greece. An amazing comeback with two late goals to win that second leg 2-1 took Metalist through on away goals.
Metalist were in contention in the Ukrainian Premier League but they have fallen off the pace lately and looked set to finish third behind the two main contenders Shakhtar and Dinamo Kyiv. They have only tasted defeat twice domestically this season on top of that first leg loss to Olympiakos in the previous round of this competition. Olympiakos aside, it's fair to say Metalist have had the less tasking passage to the last eight but it's worth noting they are the top scorers in the Europa League this season.
