MATCH PREVIEW

One of a handful of stand-out results in West Brom's season was the 3-2 win at Newcastle back in December. Albion went through a sticky few weeks at the back-end of 2011, but clinched victory in a see-saw game through a late Paul Scharner goal.

Every time I watch the Baggies I like what I see; even when I've seen them lose they have played some good stuff and on occasion they have been really excellent - their big win over Sunderland is a case in point.

Chairman Jeremy Peace's decision to replace Roberto Di Matteo seemed a bit hasty at the time and appointing Roy Hodgson, still fresh from his Anfield nightmare, seemed risky. As the song goes, "Give Peace A Chance" (sorry!).

If Hodgson's appointment at The Hawthorns raised eyebrows, Alan Pardew's arrival at St James' or whatever we are supposed to call it now raised hackles. Like Hodgson, Pardew has more than proved his worth.

Can he take them into Europe? They certainly deserve a crack at it after a terrific campaign. It would help Newcastle's hopes of qualifying for the Europa League if the FA Cup final were to be between Chelsea or Spurs and Liverpool; because seventh in the Premier League would then be enough and they are currently comfortably sixth. What added incentive could Sunderland possibly need to win the Cup themselves and make Europe instead? Don't you just love it when the stakes get high?
