Since its inception in 1980, NSW and QLD have been battling it out creating one of the fiercest rivalry in world sports. 32 years on, nothing has changed although the Queenslanders have become the ‘team to beat’, the All Blacks of the XIII-man game.Overall, the Maroons have now won 16 series compared to the Blues 12. In games won, the Maroons lead 49 – 42 over the Blues.
This is the pinnacle of Australian sports and this won’t change. Rugby league fans or not, everyone watches State Of Origin.
In the 2011 State of Origin series, Queensland again won the decider 34-24 claiming a record 6th consecutive SOO series. The trophy has been theirs since 2006. Enough said.
Why should 2012 be any different? No reason really.
True, Queensland great Darren Lockyer has retired but there is enough talent up the East Coast to field 2 competitive squads. With or without Lockyer, the Maroons are favorites, and rightly so.
The 2012 State of Origin series will take place in 3 different states with Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium hosting game one while Sydney’s ANZ Stadium hosts game two, and Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium game three. What a final that would be provided both teams win one encounter each early on.
Let’s face it, Ricky Stuart’s Blues aren’t at their best with Michael Jennings and Jared Hayne struggling out west. Skipper Paul Gallen has just been cleared following a thigh muscle injury sustained recently while Manly’s Tony Williams hasn’t played footy since round 3. But Stuart needs the big man to have any chance of beating Meninga’s side.
NSW Blues:
1 Brett Stewart, 2 Jarryd Hayne, 3 Michael Jennings, 4 Josh Morris, 5 Akuila Uate, 6 Todd Carney, 7 Mitchell Pearce, 8 Trent Merrin, 9 Robbie Farah, 10 Paul Gallen (cap), 11 Glen Stewart, 12 Luke Lewis, 13 James Tamou, 14 Greg Bird, 15 Tony Williams, 16 Jamie Buhrer, 17 Ben Creagh
Queensland Maroons:
1 Billy Slater, 2 Darius Boyd, 3 Greg Inglis, 4 Justin Hodges, 5 Brent Tate, 6 Jonathan Thurston,7 Cooper Cronk, 8 Matt Scott, 9 Cameron Smith (cap), 10 Petero Civoniceva, 11 Nate Myles, 12 Sam Thaiday, 13 Ashley Harrison, 14 Matt Gillett, 15 Dave Taylor, 16 Ben Hannant, 17 David Shillington, Daly Cherry-Evans (18th man), Dane Nielsen (19th man)
