 The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will make its way to New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend as drivers get ready to race in the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. Stewart-Haas Racing made headlines in qualifying on Friday as they will occupy the front row in Sunday’s race which begins at 1:00 pm ET.
Ryan Newman captured his first pole of the season and 5th at New Hampshire with a qualifying lap of 135.232 mph. He is followed by teammate Tony Stewart as the two were the only drivers to go over 135 mph. Capturing the pole on Friday moves Newman into 10th place on the career pole list. Early on his career, Newman was dominant in qualifying as he captured 20 poles in 2003-04.
“It works,” he said. “It’s like making good macaroni and cheese. Sometimes, it just tastes good. I don’t know what the entire chemistry is, but I like it.”
Newman enters Sunday’s race ninth in the 2011 Sprint Cup points standings. And now, starting from the top spot will put him in good position to get his first win of the season.
“Without a doubt I have higher expectations; when you have the fastest race car you have no excuse,” Newman said. “It’s just a matter of making it the fastest car or the best race car on the last lap, given you have the right position and the right strategy and do the things that are needed to put yourself in that position.”
As for Stewart, he really needed a good qualifying lap as he is one spot away, in 11th place in the points standings, from making the Chase. The two time Cup champion is also looking for his first win of the season and has greatly increased his Odds To Win The Lenox Tools 301 with starting from the second position.
“I am frustrated because I keep having to answer the question,” he said. “I mean, are you happy when things aren’t going the way you like it to go? Makes you frustrated doesn’t it? So yes, we’re frustrated.”
David Reutimann will start third Sunday and he is followed by Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski to round out the top 5.  Points leader Kyle Busch qualified 19th and Carl Edwards, who is second in the points standings, qualified 15th.
