Sporting comes into this match as group leaders by virtue of their 2-0 victory over Swiss side FC Zurich, goals coming from Dutch forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel and former Liverpool defender Emiliano Insúa. Domestically the club is sitting in 6 th place on 11 points and are currently on a three match-winning streak, however they have yet to play the bigger sides in the Portuguese First Division like FC Porto, SL Benfica or SC Braga who at the moment occupy the top three positions. Coach Domingos Paciência has a very talented and somewhat underrated squad based around youth, they have done some good business in the transfer market with the signing of the aforementioned Ricky van Wolfswinkel from FC Utrecht, former Sevilla midfielder Diego Capel and former Barcelona winger Jeffrén Suárez. The key for this team is to be patient when in possession and moving the ball efficiently, it’s easy to show frustration against sides that aren’t easy to break down but it can be especially difficult when you are the home side and the tendency is to entertain your home support.

As for Lazio, they started the group stages with an uncharacteristic 2-2 home draw against Romanian side FC Vaslui and are on rocky form domestically as well. Their last match being a dower 0-0 home draw against Palermo, a team that is amongst the worst away sides in the Italian Serie A. The calls for coach Edy Reja’s job from the Lazio supporters are getting louder, to the point where the coach handed in his resignation only for the club to reject it and back him instead. The key players so far this season have been the two new signings, as forwards Miroslav Klose and Djibril Cissé have been good so far, players of this caliber and with their finishing ability is the one aspect of the game that Lazio lacked last season. The hope is these two can help carry the scoring load this season so that midfielder Hernanes doesn’t have to be the lone focal point of opposition defenders. Last season he had to take on the whole scoring load as a new signing coming over from Brazilian side Sao Paulo, this after having played a whole campaign in Brazil. Now the hope is with those two up front and added protection of midfielder Lorik Cana beside him he can be able to roam freely and be more creative. The club will be without defender Luciano Zauri due to red card suspension and possibly Stefan Radu and Giuseppe Biava due to injury, the hope is they can get at least one of the two injured players back so they are not so thin.

I’m going with the UNDER in this match, Lazio will look to be much more cautious away from home. This is especially the case if they are without three of their best defenders, Sporting have the attacking talent but I just don’t see this one being a goal fest.
