Grp L: Anderlecht vs AEK Athens Preview
Anderlecht midfielder Ronald Vargas has given his new club a boost ahead of their Europa League clash with AEK Athens by declaring his injury problems are almost over.
The Venezuela international joined Anderlecht from bitter rivals Club Brugge in the summer but has yet to make his debut because he is still getting back to fitness following a cruciate ligament injury.
That problem will keep him out of Thursday's Group L opener, but the 24-year-old has revealed he is getting close to a return.
"My first month here has gone went extremely well," Vargas said on the club's official website. "Everybody has welcomed me with open arms since day one.
"I feel at ease here. My condition is getting better every day and my major injury seems further and further away."
Anderlecht have had a steady start to the Jupiler League season and lie fourth after six games, two points off early-season leaders Gent.
The Brussels club saw teenage striking sensation Romelu Lukaku leave for Chelsea in the summer, and his absence will certainly be felt in Europe.
But Vargas is keen to repay the faith the club have shown in him, and help them qualify from a group which also includes Lokomotiv Moscow and Sturm Graz.
Vargas, who left Brugge under a cloud, said: "Anderlecht have shown great respect for me - what a difference from the mistrust, the doubts and criticisms at Club Brugge.
"Anderlecht fought for me and therefore I am willing to go to extremes for my new club."
Anderlecht and AEK are familiar with each other, having met in the group stage of the competition last season.
And it is the Belgians who have fonder memories of the occasion with a 1-1 draw in Greece and 3-0 win at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.
AEK's form this term will also do little to worry the hosts. They are yet to kick off their domestic campaign, while they needed an 111th-minute second-leg penalty to scrape past Georgian side Dinamo Tbilisi in the play-off round.
Anderlecht made it through to the group stage with a 4-3 win over Bursaspor of Turkey.
