MATCH PREVIEW
On 2 January 2008, Titus Bramble scored a goal of enormous symbolic significance to Wigan Athletic.
After having failed on their 20 previous attempts against Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, the smallest club in the Premier League finally took a point off the so-called Big Four.
It came at Anfield and was also the first time they'd ever notched a goal against Liverpool, having succumbed to nil on all five previous league meetings.
The opposition was fitting too, as back in 1978 when they began their Football League existence it was Bob Paisley's glittering side who dominated the footballing landscape. Bramble's goal, in its own humble way, confirmed that Wigan had completed their improbable journey.
That draw even seemed to lift the mystique for them, as they quickly added their first points against Arsenal and Chelsea - they'll have their 13th chance to record a first ever point against Manchester United when they travel to Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
The hoodoo lifted, Wigan have since enjoyed some encouraging results against Liverpool; they go into Wednesday's game having only lost one of their last five meetings.
That said, the home supporters haven't witnessed a victory against any side at the DW Stadium since August, a barren run in which they've only celebrated six goals; the most recent, though, did at least earn them their latest point against one of the big boys, as Chelsea were held on Saturday evening.
Liverpool, for their part, will arrive expecting their first victory at Wigan in more than four years, having enjoyed more wins away from home than at Anfield this campaign; indeed, the five they've recorded already matches the number they achieved throughout the whole of last season.
